About The Scullery Maid (by author Heather Matthews):

Forbidden love is the most passionate of all…

Bonnie worked in the back kitchens of a Scottish castle, scrubbing pots and pans. Since she was a child, she’d been fascinated by Lord Adam Campbell, her master, and as she grew into a beautiful young woman, she sensed he returned her feelings. But they could not be together…he could not permit himself to love a mere Scullery Maid…

In time, the longing between them grew so strong that neither could deny its power…but what hope could there be for happiness when all of society frowned upon their love?

Free Excerpt:

Bonnie was born to be a servant, a mere scullery maid. She had no education and no dowry. She had no ambitions beyond merely surviving. The end of each day found her with her red, chapped hands folded in prayer, as she knelt near her little bed. Her dresses were merely uniforms of cheap, dark muslin, worn with aprons. Everything she owned was old and shabby, but her skin was white and smooth and lustrous as mother of pearl, and her hair was a shining, dark gold that fell in thick, glossy waves, halfway down her back. Her eyes were huge and ivy green, and her lips were full and as deep mauve as the heather that grew thick and soft upon the moors.

A servant like her mother and father before her, she lived and worked in a fine castle in the Scottish highlands. She often felt lonely, with nothing but endless toil to look forward to. Her parents were dead, and she spent her days scrubbing pots and pans, lost in memories and grief, until her heart seemed to grow numb.

She worked for the Duke of Argyll, who would occasionally walk through the back kitchen in his fine tartans, inspecting the servants and their work. He was very young, perhaps nineteen, but he stood well over six feet, with smooth black hair and startling pale-blue eyes that missed nothing. He was young, rich, and unmarried, and he carried himself like a young god.

He was so very confident and unafraid that Bonnie felt small and insignificant when he spoke to her in the kitchen. But he was kind. “You are wee Bonnie, Gordon’s daughter?” he had asked her, gruff but gentle, as she trembled before him. She had been just twelve years old the first time he really spoke to her. “Yes, Milord” she had muttered, and then she had waited desperately for his attention to stray elsewhere. He seemed to gaze deep into her dark, emerald-green eyes, which always glowed against her porcelain complexion.

“You have his eyes”, he said, wonderingly, and he smiled, showing perfect white teeth in a chiseled, handsome face. His smile seemed to light him up from within, lending rosy high color to his pale skin. She smiled back at him, dazed by his glamour, and then he moved on. She was a mere slip of a girl then, with washerwoman’s hands, and no meat on her bones. From that day forward, she was in awe of the Duke, and she waited eagerly for his rare visits, full of trepidation and also a sort of churning excitement.

When she prayed at night, now a young woman of eighteen, she often fought to keep his image out of her mind. He was a grown man of twenty-five now, and his parents were dead, just as her mother and father were. She tried to be good, and to focus on being a faithful servant, someone he would be proud to have in his employ. But she could not deny that her loyalty was all for the love of him.

Top Romance Novels Of All Time

January 24th, 2010

Romance novels take us away into another world. They provide us with a sense of passion and longing that lingers long after we turn the final page! If you adore romance novels, from Jane Austen to modern day chick lit, you will enjoy this list.

The Mists Of Avalon - Marion Zimmer Bradley - This novel has it all! It rewrites the romantic story of Camelot from a female perspective. You will be enthralled by Morgaine of The Faeries and her desperate love for the handsome Lancelet. You will also enjoy the sweeping historical backdrop of England, where the old religion of Goddess worship is being replaced by Christianity. Guinevere and King Arthur are pivotal characters in this epic masterpiece, which has love, passion, and betrayal on every single page.

Damage - Josephine Hart - if you prefer your romance with a darker, edgier feel, this book could spark your imagination. Damage tells the story of a doctor-turned-politician who simply goes through the motions of living, devoid of true passion and love. When he meets his handsome son’s fiancee, he realizes that more is possible. The dangerous love affair between Anna and her future father-in-law is fierce and primitive. Both parties are drawn further into forbidden sin and passion…both know there will be a price that must be paid…

Mistral’s Daughter - Judith Krantz - This juicy page-turner tells the tale of an artist and his muses. Julian Mistral is mega-talented, temperamental, and tempestuous. He finds romance with Maggy Lunel, who is an artist’s model, and their passionate union is fraught with drama. Set in the WWII period, Mistral collaborates with Nazi invaders in order to do the one thing he loves most - to paint! Julian and Maggy’s love does not survive Julian’s selfishness, but fate has much in store for the arrogant master. Maggy’s beautiful daughter, Teddy, from another relationship, falls in love with Julian and opens his heart.

Polo - Jilly Cooper - This novel takes readers into the glamorous, high-stakes world of professional polo, where handsome players vie for accolades - on the field and off! Beautiful women flock to the polo fields of England and Argentina to watch their heroes play chukkas. Dom Perignon and Cristal flow as the rich play their elite games. Ricky France-Lynch is the brooding hero of Polo, a great player with a tragic past. He loses his wife to a richer man, and knows he needs to get her back at all costs. But is she worth having?

Bridget Jones’ Diary - Helen Fielding - Bridget lives a hedonistic life, filled with bottles of Chardonnay, packs of Silk Cut cigarettes, and fantasies of shagging her sexy boss, Daniel Cleaver. Her diary is a hilarious, madcap journey through the life of a modern working girl. Echoing the romance between Darcy and Elizabeth in Pride & Prejudice, Bridget Jones’ Diary finds the perfect bridge between courtly romance and the love affairs of today. When Bridget meets Mark Darcy, she is put off by his unfashionable Christmas sweater and his arrogance. Over time, she sees the real substance of the man.

Pride & Prejudice - Jane Austen - Elizabeth Bennet is poor, but genteel. She and her sisters are expected to marry well in order to survive. Elizabeth wants true love and intellectual union more than money. She thinks she has found both with handsome Wickham, but it is a cruel illusion. She becomes involved with Darcy, a rich but unfriendly neighbor. She dislikes him at first, but, over time, their mutual attraction smolders and ignites…

Rebecca - Daphne DuMaurier - A young woman meets Max de Winter during a holiday and becomes intrigued with him. He proposes and she is lovestruck. She moves into his imposing mansion, Mandelay, to be with him. She is of modest family and means, and her timidity and insecurities make her quiet and unassuming…at first. In time, she learns dark secrets about the first Mrs. De Winter - Rebecca. What she learns will change her life forever…

Lady Chatterley’s Lover - D.H. Lawrence - Lady Constance Chatterly lives in the English Midlands with her husband, Sir Clifford. He returns from battle in WWI, paralyzed from the waist down. Their marriage suffers as Constance longs for physical and emotional intimacy that Clifford cannot provide. When she meets Mellors, the randy gamekeeper who works on their estate, she begins a touching journey into true passion, earthy and real…

Gone With The Wind - Margaret Mitchell - The passions of green-eyed Scarlett O’Hara give her an Irish temper and a will to succeed at everything she takes her hand to. When she decides on Ashley Wilkes, she is single-minded in her determination. But quiet, thoughtful Ashley will not follow his heart and return her ardor. Instead, he marries Melanie, a sweet cousin. Scarlett unleashes her rage on Ashley in a most unladylike fashion at a county barbecue, and then she marries another man to spite him. During this time, she comes to know the dashing roue, Rhett Butler, whose appetites match her own…

My Newest Top Ten List - Deadliest Female Killers

November 22nd, 2009

I love to read, and I have to admit, I’ve read my fair share of true crime novels. From Anne Rule’s sensitive, richly-detailed novels (such as The Stranger Beside Me) to the work of attorney Vincent Bugliosi (Helter Skelter), I’ve been a student of human psychology, in its most mutated forms, for many years.

If you also enjoy reading true crime, you’ll enjoy my latest top ten list at www.Toptenz.net. Top 10 Deadliest Female Killers tells the stories of notorious women who’ve given in to the darkest elements of human nature. From Karla Homolka, whose role in the murders of three young women is cloaked in controversy, to the Blood Countess Elizabeth Bathory, whose cruel acts were conducted in a Slovakian castle…these stories are indictments of narcissism, selfishness, and sadism.

If you enjoy my writing, consider clicking on the book cover at the right, and picking up a copy of my first novel, Carolina, on Amazon.com You’ll find the book goes much deeper into human nature than many romance novels.

Ireland’s Natural Wonders

Top Ten Tortured Artists

July 1st, 2009

My whole life, I’ve lived to read. I was lucky enough to grow up with a father who studied history at University. Our den was always filled with all sorts of literary delights, and I devoured them from a very young age. From Lytton Strachey’s biography of Queen Victoria, to Inside The Third Reich…I read them all, and learned so much from each of them.

My greatest love is fiction. I consider myself lucky to have enjoyed the work of authors like George Orwell, Martin Amis, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Shakespeare and Frank Herbert (among so many others). I also adore the non-fiction musings of P.J. O’Rourke.

Aside from the enduring pleasures of reading and re-reading brilliant books, I also have great passion for art and music. There is nothing I love more than touring galleries and museums and drinking in the beauty. I never write without some form of musical accompaniment, and I could play classical music on the piano for hours without stopping.

When it came time to write a new top ten list for www.toptenz.net, I decided to focus on the life stories of authors, painters, and musicians. I chose to tell the stories of the ones who truly suffered for their art. I hope you visit the bolded link and read the list. Every person on my list meant something to me and always will. Their pain did not stop them from creating masterpieces of human ingenuity.

Carolina Is Now Available At Blackberry Books!

May 29th, 2009

If you’ve visited Vancouver, B.C., you know that Granville Island is a beautiful place. It’s one of my favorite places to hang out, especially on a weekday when it’s not so crowded. Often, my father and I go down to watch the luxury boats we dream of owning! In lieu of buying a yacht, we once rented a little $40 an hour motorboat and puttered around the area…I steered while Dad basked and gazed out to sea. Then we headed to Bridges for Corona and smoked salmon pizza. It’s not a bad way to kill a day…

Anyway, I’m a fan of the place, so I’m pleased to let people know that my first novel, Carolina, is now available at the very charming Blackberry Books in Granville Island. If you’re ever in Vancouver, be sure to drop by and browse their wide selection of Canadian fiction (and a lot more). And be sure to enjoy a cold beer (or an ice cream cone) as well.

Here’s a link to Blackberry Books.

A New Five-Star Review For Carolina!

Carolina - hit the bolded link to order your own copy!

This book was most unusual. The author, Ms. Matthews, followed the lives of several uniquely different individuals throughout their struggles and successes in life. How she brought them together was a phenomenal feat. I was spellbound and unable to put the book down. Considering the fact that this was a plus-sized novel, it wasn’t easy.

Jacob Goldman, founder and CEO of Spur Records International in Memphis, Tennessee, was a 34-year-old workaholic who was enamored with his superstar, Stella Davis. Stella struggled with alcohol and drugs. Their sexual relationship suffered in relation to Stella’s addictions. He worked with a partner to have a contest for “Country Queen” for a new artist who could write music and who was a beautiful songbird.

Caroline Evans, from Calais, Maine, ran away from her dysfunctional home when she told her parents she was pregnant. They insisted she go live with her aunt and have the baby adopted. The father, Daniel, ran away to Canada and refused to help her. She went to Memphis but slipped away before her aunt found her. She found a job, married the boss of the grocery store, and had her baby girl, Elizabeth.

These two main characters lived roller-coaster lives before they ever met. I loved the way Matthews delved into the realistic lifestyles of these two. Their families and friends, as well as some less savory people, created some in-depth storylines. Each was fascinating on its own. There were sexual scenes, but were not offensive. There were many tears and much suffering. This added to the mesmerizing book.

There was so much going on in the book, but I don’t want to give away any of the surprises which kept me captivated. All I can do is encourage you to read it for yourself. I’m at a loss as to how to assure readers of the magnetism of the book. I highly recommend it to all. There is so much involved that everyone will find things to love about the story

Overall rating: Five Hearts =Five Stars
Sensuality rating: Very sensual
